Morvi Sensé - Gestural

A gesturally controlled instrument, designed for use as an M4L device within Ableton Live. The device uses your inbuilt/external camera to recognize your hand gestures, which can further be mapped to control any parameter or a macro.

Pointing up - ☝️

Usage -

  1. Unzip the entire folder into your standard path for storing Max For Live devices.
  1. Load the M4L patch (Morvi Sense - Gestural.amxd) into a channel.
  2. Select the camera source to be used.
  3. Hit the 'Map' button next to the gesture.
  4. Select the Ableton parameter to be controlled by the gesture.
  5. Next to the 'Map' button, modify the ranges of the parameter if required.
  6. Use the left hand to control the mapped parameter.

Troubleshooting -

When switching to a different channel in Ableton, the camera might automatically shut down, depending on how Ableton handles instances of that camera device.

In this case, to use that instance of the M4L device again (by preserving all previous mappings), hit the Hot-Swap icon on the device (🔄), and select the same M4L device (Morvi Sense - Gestural) from the Ableton Browser. This should restart the camera while preserving the same old settings.

MacOS troubleshooting -

Users have reported issues with some MacOS devices. To fix these, my latest update includes 'TROUBLESHOOT RESTART' and 'TROUBLESHOOT RELOAD' options.

If the camera doesn't load up on the device -

  1. Click on the 'Edit' button (to the left of the 🔄 button). This will open up the presentation mode of the patch.
  2. Within the Max patch, hit the 'TROUBLESHOOT RESTART' button. If the camera still doesn't start, hit 'TROUBLESHOOT RELOAD' button. The camera should start up.
  3. Use the device as usual from this Max Patch view instead. Hit map in the patch, select a parameter in Ableton, and the gestures should work as usual.
